Tradition and Customs The tried and true stands the test of time

Bönigen and Iseltwald have lovingly preserved their traditions. As you stroll through the narrow alleyways of the villages, you'll notice charming little details: a unique flower arrangement here, a witty saying there, or intricate woodcarvings on a housefront. Curious to learn more about the houses in Bönigen and the stories of their residents? Or would you rather take a scenic drive up to an alpine pasture and watch a cheesemaker at work? With us, both are possible!

Village Tour of Bönigen

Discover the fascinating history, traditional customs and beautifully preserved wooden houses of Bönigen on a guided village tour. Many of the historic buildings date back to the 16th to 18th centuries and showcase the remarkable craftsmanship of local woodcarvers.

Along the way, you will see landmarks such as the “Housihuus,” built in 1757 and known as Bönigen’s first inn. In 1808, King Frederick I of Württemberg stayed there during his travels. Learn more about the village’s rich heritage and admire some of its most impressive historic buildings.

Alpine Dairy Visit on Bättenalp above Iseltwald

Join us for a visit to the alpine dairy above Iseltwald and watch the cheesemaker produce traditional Swiss alpine cheese. In a large copper kettle, fresh milk is heated over a wood fire before the cheese is carefully lifted using traditional cheesecloth. You will also have the opportunity to visit the cows in the barn and enjoy a platter of homemade alpine products served with a drink. An authentic experience showcasing one of Switzerland’s most cherished traditions.

As parking on the alp is not permitted without special authorization and the hike up takes around three hours, this visit offers an exclusive opportunity to experience Harzisboden. After the visit, guests may continue on an independent hike through the impressive mountain landscape, for example toward Faulhorn.
